Fayoum is two hours from Cairo and the closest you can get to leaving the city behind without boarding a plane. Lake Qarun, Tunis Village with its pottery studios and small guesthouses, the waterfalls at Wadi El Rayan, and Wadi Al-Hitan — the UNESCO valley where whale fossils sit in open desert.
